Curriculum Isn’t the Enemy: How to Use It as a Tool, Not a Script

Let’s talk curriculum. It’s one of the most debated topics in math education—and it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

Here’s my stance: curriculum is a tool, not the teacher. It’s meant to guide, not dictate. And when teachers are supported in how to use it flexibly, it can actually become a source of empowerment.

When I work with schools and districts on curriculum implementation, I focus on:

  • Helping teachers unpack materials so they understand the why behind each lesson.

  • Supporting thoughtful adaptations that align with instructional goals, not derail them.

  • Bridging gaps between standards and student needs, with attention to pacing, scaffolding, and task selection.

Curriculum doesn’t have to limit creativity. With the right training and mindset, it can fuel it.
